The 12th Player: How Thunder Families Help Win the Game

At Thunder SC, there are eleven players on the field, and one more that never shows up on the lineup card. We call it the 12th Player: our players, families, coaches and supporters, together. The energy around the team affects what happens on the field, and our families are a huge part of that energy.

Loud, positive, and on the same page

The passion of our families should create confidence, stability, belonging and pride, never distraction or unhealthy pressure. Our standard is simple: be loud and positive, respect roles, and protect each player’s ability to learn.

That means cheering for more than goals. We encourage families to praise courage, teamwork, preparation and how a player responds after a tough moment. It also means letting coaches coach and letting players make their own decisions, without instructions from the sideline. Mistakes are part of how players grow, and they learn best when they feel free to try.

Respect, readiness, and team spirit

Being the 12th Player also means treating opponents, officials, facilities and other families with dignity. It means helping players arrive prepared and early enough to connect with their teammates before the whistle. And it means celebrating the whole team: the assist, the tackle, the good communication and the unselfish run that never shows up on the scoreboard.

The ride home

Some of the most important coaching happens in the car after the game. The player should feel supported, not evaluated. Here are the questions we love families to ask:

• What did you enjoy?
• What was one brave decision you made?
• How did you help a teammate?
• What did the game teach you?
• What is one detail you want to improve next?

These questions build resilience, reflection and joy, and they keep the love of the game where it belongs.
